Live video call verification means a Google support representative joins a video call with you and asks you to show your business location and proof that you own or manage it. It is one of several methods Google may offer, but not every business is eligible, and calls only happen during your business hours.

Live video call vs recorded video

Google offers two video-based methods, and they are easy to confuse:

Live video callRecorded video
How it worksA real-time call with a Google support representativeYou record one continuous clip of at least 30 seconds and upload it
WhenOnly within your location's business hoursAny time you can film the required details
FeedbackThe representative can ask you to show more on the spotGoogle reviews it later, usually within five business days
AvailabilityNot available for all businessesOffered to eligible storefront, service-area and hybrid businesses

You cannot choose between them. Google says verification methods are automatically determined and cannot be changed, although if your profile shows several options you can try another one.

What you need before the call

  • A phone or device that supports video calls, with a good connection.
  • To be physically at the business during your listed business hours.
  • Your keys, so you can show you can open the premises or vehicle.
  • Access to employee-only areas, branded equipment or signage.
  • A profile that is already accurate: name, address or service area, and category matching the real world.

What the representative will ask to see

Google's help page gives examples of the proof it looks for on a live call: outside signs, branded equipment, employee-only areas, or your keys. Expect to be guided through something like this:

  1. The outside of the business and its surroundings, so they can match the location.
  2. Your signage with the business name.
  3. Proof you can access the business, such as unlocking the door.
  4. Areas or equipment only staff would have access to.

Service-area businesses can expect to show a branded vehicle, tools and equipment instead of a shopfront.

Tips for a smooth call

  • Charge your phone and test your camera and connection beforehand.
  • Go outside first if possible, so you are ready to show the street and signage straight away.
  • Move slowly and hold the camera steady on names and numbers.
  • Keep private details out of shot, such as customer information and other people's faces.
  • Do not edit your profile just before or during verification.

If the call is not offered or does not work

If "Get verified" appears again on your profile afterwards, Google could not fully verify you. Try again, using another method if one is offered. If no method works, Google suggests contacting Business Profile support through its "Contact us" page.

For most businesses today, the recorded video is the more common route. Our step-by-step video verification guide covers it in detail.
